The main methods and types of flushing of boilers
Currently, there are two ways to clean the boilers: folding and in-place. Each of these methods includes several different flushing methods. In-place flushing of the boiler is carried out by chemical, hydrodynamic and complex methods, and folding flushing is carried out by chemical, hydrodynamic, mechanical or complex method.
During folding flushing, it is necessary to completely disassemble the system. Folding cleaning of the boiler is carried out only in special cases when the degree of contamination of the boiler is very high and the further operation of the system is assessed as unsafe. Such an operation is performed by a physical method, but it is also possible to use chemical and physical flushing.
Hydrodynamic cleaning of boilers – high-pressure hydrodynamic high-pressure apparatus is used to clean steam and hot water boilers. It is considered less dangerous, because with this option, scale is removed from the parts of the boiler using a powerful jet of water under high pressure. There is much better performance than the first method. This method is environmentally friendly, it does not use chemical and hazardous substances.
Chemical flushing of boilers – traditional and modern reagents are used, which reliably loosen and dissolve scale and sediment when cleaning boilers, thereby allowing to completely restore the functionality of the boiler simply, cheaply and quickly. And with a folding method, chemical flushing consists of the following: contaminated parts are taken from the boiler system and are placed in a container with a cleaning solution for several hours. Then they are flushed under running water and mounted back into the system.
Mechanical cleaning of boilers – hand tools (scrapers, brushes, as well as folding heads with air or electric drive) and various mechanical tools are used, which in total are used to clean steam boilers of any capacity. With this type of flushing, special attention should be paid to the choice of tools, because there is a high risk of damage to the boiler itself. This cannot be allowed, because the process of corrosion of the metal parts of the boiler system will accelerate so much. That is why it is necessary to strictly observe the rules of operation of the selected tools.
Complex boiler cleaning – a combination of methods is used. For example, mechanical and chemical flushing, or hydrodynamic and chemical, etc. are used in combination.
Timely in-place flushing of the gas boiler more than half reduces the likelihood of re-formation of scale and sediment, reduces fuel consumption, as a result, increasing the efficiency up to 98%. And, importantly, it completely eliminates the need for dismantling the boiler and costly replacement of failed parts.

Each operation of cleaning or servicing the boiler is carried out after disconnecting the fuel and electric power supply.
Cleaning of heating surfaces should be done:
- once every three months when working on diesel,
- once a year when working on natural gas.
When using matched other fuels, the frequency of cleaning is determined by the results of inspections of heat exchange surfaces and measurements of flue gas temperatures. The frequency of cleaning also depends on the correct setting of the combustion mode.
With an increase in the final flue gas temperature by 30°C compared to the temperature with a clean boiler at a given load, it is necessary to clean:
- open the front, remove intensifiers;
- perform mechanical cleaning of the flame tube with scrapers and brushes, and smoke tube with a brush. The soot is removed from the pipes of the second run to the flue gas collector. Soot must be removed from the furnace and flue gas collector with a vacuum cleaner or by hand after each cleaning;
- install intensifiers, replace damaged ones;
- clean the surface of the refractory layer of the frontal door of the boiler with a soft nonmetallic bristle brush. Ensure no damage to the insulation (coating). If necessary, repair the insulation.
Approximately the same operations are performed when cleaning small wall boilers and large steam boilers with a lot of pipe (convective) beams inside the firebox.
