Mechanical cleaning of boilers and heat exchangers

Our engineers have developed unique technologies that make cleaning more efficient and less time consuming. However, there are cases when, for certain reasons, we cannot clean with modern equipment. These factors do not depend on us, because they are as follows:
- heat carrier is of poor quality (water is not prepared properly, it contains the presence of minerals and salts that exceed the norm);
- equipment control is improper;
- equipment forms blockages that are not controllable.
In such situations, our engineers advise to perform cleaning in the old proven way, i.e. using mechanical cleaning.
Mechanical cleaning can be used when servicing boilers, boiler equipment, heat exchangers (shell-and-tube, plate, etc.). However, in order for cleaning to be carried out at the proper level, it is necessary to use special equipment during operations:
- metal brushes
- conical cutter
- shaving knife
- bore brushes
- hydropneumatic and pneumatic tools.
Cleaning technology using the listed equipment will be described below.
When selecting a tool for cleaning boilers, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the space being cleaned (used by heat carriers or furnace). Since the method of mechanical cleaning is mainly used in the presence of fairly solid deposits and the impossibility of its removal using chemistry or pneumatic pulses, the tools are selected based on the degree of solidification of these deposits. The main condition that should be observed when selecting a tool and working with it is the elimination of the possibility of damage to the metal surface under deposits. This is very important, because any, even the smallest scratch can lead to the fact that the boiler fails ahead of time or deteriorates.
As for the cleaning procedure itself, it is produced by the manual method. The specialist penetrates the furnace and, using selected tools, removes the formed deposits. The cleaning of the coolant tanks is carried out with metal brushes specially designed for such cases.
Cleaning the shell-and-tube heat exchangers consists in dismantling the covers and then cleaning each tube with the help of special equipment. Specialists working at ASGARD-Service, as a rule, use brushes, cones, etc., to achieve a result that satisfies the Customer.
Cleaning of heat exchangers and boiler equipment by hydrodynamic method
This cleaning is carried out with the help of special installations that supply water under high pressure. The procedure itself is very simple – under the action of a powerful jet of water, the sediments present on the surface are broken up and exfoliated.
The peculiarity of this method lies in the various equipment options. For example, when the plate heat exchanger is cleaned, it is enough to disassemble it into plates and carry out the flushing under a strong stream of water.
When pipes, nozzles and other parts that are not wide enough in diameter are cleaned, a special cleaning rod is used in the process, which has a nozzle at the end. Such a device allows our specialists to easily penetrate into places with limited access and qualitatively remove the deposits that are present. The device operates according to the principle described above – sediments are broken under the stream of water that is fed under pressure.
Hydropneumatic cleaning is one of the main methods. The essence of the method consists in the use of a compressor by our specialists, the output pressure of which is at least 0.6 MPa, which supplies compressed air to the cleaned space. Since air is supplied under pressure, the flow of heat carrier begins to move at a higher speed, and due to the uneven movement of air, sediments begin to come off the surface. Next, the leaching of the destroyed sediments by water flows. A discharge point or a tap (if any in the system) appears as a discharge point. If the design does not provide for the presence of cranes and nozzles, then before starting work they must be embedded. Compressor operation should be uniform, and the air supply should be carried out not by constant flows, but by impulses consisting of a series of air-water jolts and allowing the formation of turbulence, loosening scale.
